The 2014 broadcasting regulation bill requires that all Kenyan broadcasters meet a quota of 40% local content. Broadcasters should also air at least 5 hours of children’s content every week.
Data from the comm auth shows that out of 51 broadcasters in Kenya only 4 tv stations were able to meet the requirement of 5hrs a week of children programming.
The communication authority of Kenya has suspended mt. Kenya tv station for four weeks for airing sexually explicit content during a kid’s show called mucci wa ciana which loosely translates to Home for the children.
In a bid to hit the children’s 5-hours watch time requirement, mt Kenya tv decided to air free jimmy, a 2006 adult animated comedy film on 19th April at 2 pm. The film shows incidences of drug abuse, robbery and violence enough to give a nine-year-old an existential crisis.
